Day trippers

A round the island bus tour today. Incredibly hot all day, so it became something of an endurance test. First up to a local village called Panagia on the side of the mountain, where brisk mountain streams ran through, as well as the main island road which regularly gets bogged down by traffic. A walk up the path and into the local church, was already quite demanding. After we sauntered down by the side of running streams that cut through the village, and did some shopping, buying a tablecloth and some walnuts in honey from a woman the guide called Mrs Suzi.

Then all aboard the bus and off down the coast to Aliki. This is pretty much the only spot on Thassos I recalled from visiting many years ago. Baking hot here, and a little strip of land connecting an island to the mainland. A few ruins here of place where salt was prepared and traded.  We also walked about on the little wooded bit, and then managed to find our way back in time to get a cold coke. Back in the magic bus it transpired that one of our party had been injured at Aliki and was being taxied off with her family to the medical centre.

From there to a nunnery dedicated to St Michael beautifully situated on the coast. Lorraine, already boiling, had to put on an extra layer of clothes to be decent in the eyes of God. From here inland to a village called Theologos, where we had an enormous meal as part of the tour, along with a decent splash of retzina. From here eventually back to Thassos Town, where we bought a couple of pots from Costis Pottery, where Costis was at work.

A long hot day, and we went straight into the sea. Instantly it became cloudy and the wind blew up.  A small meal in the evening in a rudely-staffed taverna in a mosquito hotspot. An early night.

Below in Panagea, fountains in Panagia, ruins in Aliki, the nunnery complex, the view from the nunnery, cat on a hot slate roof in Theologos,
