Recomposed
Lorraine off to Hove to get her hair cut today. I finalised the pamphlet-length MS and sent it off. It contains poems that mess with the fabric of reality, they are very marmite. I hope they like marmite.
Then off to Brighton to meet Mrs Kenny, with her lovely glossy hair. We mooched up St James's road, and stopped in the pub called The Saint James, where we went on our first date for a quick drink before heading to the restaurant that used to be across the road. A chaotic, but friendly pub these days. A large blue and yellow macaw had pride of place on a tall stand at the back of the room, and apparently had form in stealing people's earrings. Someone having their photo taken with it, while their dog barking continuously at it. Another dog joined in and there was an ear splitting cacophony. Meanwhile a bloke sat on our tabletop to look at the racing scores. The pizza we had ordered to share took an age to come, but was excellent when it did. We drank some lemonade shandy there, and then walked further up and had a drink in a little pub I'd been to with Anton called The Hand in Hand where there were people playing games all around us. A complex card game with five people playing on the table next to us, and some kind of throwing a coin at a wall game. Three people were playing this, and an amiable man with downs syndrome came in to coach them to play better, which they accepted with good grace. Lorraine in her element.
Then off to St George's church, where we met Innis and Rosie, to watch a live performance of Max Richter's Recomposed Vivaldi, performed by The Mystery Ensemble. Absolutely enormous fun, wonderful young classical musicians. As soon as the opening piece was played, Rosie was sobbing setting Innis off. It was the music they played at their wedding, and Rosie associates it with her late mum Susan. They loved it though, and Lorraine had arranged it, which was brilliant. Made me hear this music, which I know well, differently. Such a brilliant piece.
Then off back to the centre of town to eat some tapas and have a laugh, before Lorraine and I bussed back to Seaford. Luckily (I thought) Innis hadn't been involved, as a coastguard, in the four people drowning recently at Shoreham just along from Brighton. A horrible business. But a lovely evening. Home on the bus.
Below Lorraine in the Saint James, and Innis and Rosie.
