Back from Narnia

So back from the emotional Narnia that was the wedding and honeymoon. For Lorraine that meant getting up shortly after 6:30 and driving off into the county for meetings. For me it meant the prospect of spending the next couple of days doing my accounts, and doing what I can to progress the house sale. Broke off to go to the gym, and then pressed on with getting my accounts ready, looking at invoices and so on. A small part of me -- a very small part -- quite likes the necessity of having to do this once a year. It is a kind of spring clean and makes you feel rather virtuous after a while, and the feeling that you can account for yourself is quite satisfying. Although that is not to say I wasn't yearning to slip back into the wardrobe with Lorraine and dance with Mr Tumnus and the talking beavers again. Lorraine home briefly this evening before going off to sing in the choir. I walked with her along London Road, and as I returned a back a fox scooted across the road and down a s...

I know what I like in my wardrobe

As yesterday, pushing on with the business book. Broke off at noon to meet Anton in the Marwood Cafe. I am avoiding coffee, but had tea. He showed me a new game on his iPad and we talked about marketing and the history of Britain 1974-79 as depicted in Seasons in the Sun and other business perched on stools on a table with human-shaped moulded legs. Returning home, I eventually pinned down the plumbers to a time and price. Felt good about this, and about completing the rewrite of the introductory 'Orientations' section of the business book. The business case for my ideas is now made more clearly, without losing I hope, its readability. Lorraine out at a retirement do this evening. I meanwhile kept a low profile. I had been invited to a booze up with the music boys in the Evening Star, but I avoided this being laced with antibiotics etc.   Listening to Seasons in the Sun and watching the first half of the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe movie again. I love the mo...
Breakthrough A good writing day today - the first for some time. Had a big breakthrough this afternoon and raced ahead with the Skelton in Guernsey story and the first draft is almost complete. To my suprise there is quite a sad bit at the end, and tears came into my eyes as I typed it. In an adventure story, life is heightened, and it needs a corresponding bittersweet moment at the end to realise that amid all the action and dynamic changes, something is also lost. Classic children's fiction is full of it. The children return from Narnia back to grey England, the magic ends. In Toy Story 3 the toys are given away. At night listening to the radio and beginning to revamp my peterkenny.co.uk website.

The magic never stops Feeling antsy today, so went for a walk by the sea at Hove with Lorraine, along with most of the population of the City and some Great Danes, which seemed abundant in the city this weekend. They wear yellow jackets with the logo of a Great Dane charity on them. This all made me think of Nev who owned two of the monsters when I worked with him. As leaden clouds eventually took over we then went to see Prince Caspian . I have loved the C.S. Lewis Narnia books from childhood, and I thought this was a pretty good adaptation of what was my least favourite story of the series. A bit Lord of the Rings lite in the fighting, but it also had a few moments that were its own mainly revolving around Aslan and Lucy. The Spanish-flavoured baddies were enjoyable too. I have absolutely no problem with the Christian undercurrents either. Dismissing a work on this basis is buffoonish, as if you'd have to disallow half of European culture in the last millennium too. Then I went ...
